Indianapolis police were patrolling downtown around 11:30 Saturday night when gunfire shattered the peace of the Mile Square. Tracking the assault to the intersection of Illinois and West Maryland Streets, just outside Circle Centre Mall, officers located a group of six teens ranging in ages from 12 – 16.
All six had been shot.
Emergency services rushed the juveniles to area hospitals. Five of them suffered non-life threatening injuries, but the sixth was admitted in critical condition. Incredibly, a seventh victim fled the scene before police arrived, only to come to the attention of authorities when the wounded minor presented at Community South Hospital as a walk-in. As of Monday, all but two victims had been released to go home, and both remaining patients were in stable condition.
Police have declined to name any suspects but state the attack was part of a preceding dispute. Multiple guns were used, and they believe more than one assailant may have been involved. Although two juveniles were arrested on site on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, department representatives have declined to say whether those individuals are suspected of further involvement. Meanwhile, investigators are following up on several leads, including reviewing security camera footage and requesting multiple search warrants.
Saturday’s attack was the third mass shooting in Indianapolis in as many weeks.
